The Brain Hates Randomness More Than It Hates Being Wrong: A History of Making Things Up Instead
In October of 1347, twelve Genoese trading ships docked in Sicily carrying sailors who were either dead or wishing they were. The Black Death had arrived in Europe. Within five years, somewhere between a third and half of the continent's population was gone.
Causes were unknown. Transmission was invisible. The disease killed randomly — devout Christians alongside sinners, physicians alongside patients, entire villages while the next one over went untouched. The actual explanation (a bacterium, Yersinia pestis, spread primarily by flea-to-human transmission) was not available to 14th-century Europeans and wouldn't be for another five and a half centuries.
What was available, almost immediately, was an explanation. Several, actually. The plague was divine punishment for collective sin. It was caused by a particular conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars in 1345. It was being deliberately spread through the water supply by Jewish communities. The third explanation resulted in the massacre of thousands of people across Germany, France, and Spain.
The explanation was entirely false. The massacres were entirely real. And the psychology that produced both — the urgent, desperate need to convert terrifying randomness into a legible story with identifiable agents — is the same psychology that produces conspiracy theories today, in the same circumstances, with the same emotional logic.
What the Brain Is Actually Doing
To understand why this keeps happening across five thousand years of recorded history, you have to start with what the human brain is actually built to do.
The brain is not a truth-finding machine. It's a prediction machine. Its core function — the thing it evolved to do — is to generate models of the world that allow the organism to anticipate what comes next. Accurate predictions mean survival. Surprises, in the ancestral environment, frequently meant death.
Randomness is the prediction machine's nightmare. A world in which bad things happen for no discernible reason and to no particular pattern is a world in which the machine cannot do its job. The brain experiences genuine, measurable distress in conditions of unpredictability — not because unpredictability is morally bad, but because it is functionally useless. You cannot prepare for it. You cannot avoid it. You cannot act on it.
A false but detailed explanation, on the other hand, gives the machine something to work with. If the plague is being spread by a specific group through a specific mechanism, you can do something: identify the group, avoid the mechanism, restore a sense of agency. The explanation's relationship to reality is almost secondary to its functional value as a cognitive tool.
This is not stupidity. It is, in a narrow sense, adaptive. The problem is that it's adaptive at the individual level in ways that can be catastrophic at the social level — a distinction the brain was not designed to make.
The Pattern Across the Historical Record
The historical record is unusually useful here because it lets you run what amounts to a longitudinal study of conspiracy thinking across radically different cultural, technological, and informational contexts. The result is striking: the conditions that produce conspiracy theories are consistent even when everything else changes.
The core condition is the combination of genuine uncertainty with high stakes. Low-stakes uncertainty (nobody knows who will win the Super Bowl) doesn't produce conspiracy theories. High-stakes certainty (we know exactly why this happened) doesn't either. The conspiracy theory is specifically the product of situations where something important and threatening has happened and the real explanation is either unknown, unsatisfying, or both.
The medieval plague fits perfectly. So does the Victorian spiritualism craze, which exploded in the 1840s and 1850s — a period of rapid industrialization, mass urban migration, and the social dissolution of traditional community structures. Millions of Americans and Europeans became convinced that the dead could communicate through mediums, that there was a hidden spiritual order beneath the chaotic surface of industrial life, and that certain individuals had special access to this order. The Fox sisters' 1848 séance in upstate New York launched a movement that eventually claimed millions of adherents, including serious intellectuals and public figures.
The spiritualism movement wasn't primarily about grief, though grief was present. It was about pattern. Industrial capitalism had produced a world that felt arbitrary — where you could work hard and still lose everything, where the old social structures that had provided predictability were gone, and where the new ones hadn't yet stabilized. Spiritualism offered a hidden order underlying the chaos. It offered agents (spirits, mediums) and mechanisms (communication, influence) in place of randomness. It offered exactly what conspiracy theories always offer: the comfort of a complicated explanation over the terror of genuine uncertainty.
Why Debunking Has Never Worked
The most consistent finding in the historical record — and one that modern psychology research has confirmed repeatedly — is that presenting accurate counter-information to conspiracy believers doesn't reduce belief. In many documented cases, it increases it.
This seems paradoxical until you understand what the conspiracy theory is actually doing. It's not primarily a truth claim. It's a coping mechanism. Attacking the truth claim while leaving the underlying uncertainty intact doesn't solve the problem the conspiracy theory was solving. It just removes the solution without addressing the need.
The Catholic Church spent significant effort in the 14th century trying to stop the persecution of Jewish communities by explaining, correctly, that Jews were not spreading the plague. The explanation was medically accurate and theologically grounded. It had essentially no effect on the pogrom wave. The people carrying out the violence weren't primarily motivated by a factual belief about disease transmission. They were motivated by the psychological need for an explanation, an agent, and a potential action in the face of overwhelming, incomprehensible death.
Fast-forward to the Cold War, when the United States produced an extraordinary flowering of conspiracy thinking — communist infiltration theories, UFO cover-up narratives, assassination theories — in a period defined by the specific psychological profile of nuclear-era anxiety: a genuine, non-paranoid awareness that civilization could end randomly and without warning at any moment. The threat was real. The randomness of it was real. The conspiracy theories that proliferated in that environment were psychologically predictable responses to that specific combination.
The Part Nobody Wants to Hear
Here's what five thousand years of this pattern suggests, and it's uncomfortable: conspiracy theories are not primarily an information problem. They are a certainty problem.
People do not believe elaborate false explanations because they lack access to accurate information. The medieval scholars who promoted the planetary conjunction theory of plague causation were the most educated people in Europe. The Victorian spiritualists included scientists, physicians, and philosophers. The most sophisticated conspiracy theories of the 20th century were developed and promoted by people with advanced degrees and access to abundant factual information.
What they shared wasn't ignorance. What they shared was a situation in which accurate information produced an answer that was psychologically intolerable: we don't know, it's partly random, there may be nothing you can do.
The conspiracy theory is an answer to that intolerance, not to the factual question. And until the conditions producing the intolerance change — until the underlying uncertainty is genuinely reduced, or until people develop the specific psychological capacity to tolerate accurate uncertainty without requiring a narrative to resolve it — the conspiracy theory will persist regardless of how many facts are deployed against it.
History has been running this experiment across every culture, every technology level, and every information environment that has ever existed. The results are in. The brain prefers a detailed wrong answer. It has always preferred a detailed wrong answer. Understanding why is the first step toward anything more useful than being frustrated that it keeps happening.
The 14th-century physician who tried to stop a pogrom by explaining bacteriology — had the concept existed — would have failed. The modern fact-checker trying to stop viral misinformation is running the same experiment. History already knows the result. The question is whether we're willing to look at it.
